John W. Lee:
Born and raised in San Diego, CA, John Lee followed his family dream and attended the University of California, San Diego with aspirations of becoming a doctor. He then later realized his pursuits in action sports far outweighed a future in medicine. With that said, John has developed key global insight into connecting brands with youth culture and lifestyle for the past 20 years. He lives inside the market and thinks outside of the box. John is a highly sought after industry leader for his brand building expertise, key market insight and professionalism, bringing with him a wealth of knowledge and integral relationships to the SDSI and Road to Recovery Board of Directors.
Currenty John is Senior Director of Sports Marketing at GoPro. GoPro’s versatile cameras and accessories enable people to self-capture immersive and engaging footage of themselves enjoying their favorite activities. From extreme to mainstream, GoPro’s HERO® line of wearable and gear-mountable capture devices are transforming the way consumers, professional athletes, and video production professionals capture, manage and share meaningful photo and video content. Formerly, John was a Senior Director at Wasserman Media Group managing the consulting group and its clients of the Action Sports and Olympic division consisting of brand analysis, ideation, planning, strategic development, and marketing execution.
Prior to that, John was the GM of Action Sports/Tastemaker for the consumer electronics brand SOL REPUBLIC. He is attributed to launching the emerging brand as well as initiating a retail sales strategy in those channels. John was also a partner and founder of a full-service boutique marketing agency called CUE Projects with a credible client roster: Monster Cable, Beats by Dr. Dre, Continental Tire, General Tire, Creatures of Leisure, K5 Boardshops, Penny Skateboards, Volcom, and Filtrate Eyewear.
While working as the Global Sports Marketing Director for Monster Energy, John was an integral player in building the Monster Energy brand which exploded utilizing action sports as a catalyst showcasing the iconic the green “M” claw. The phrase “lifestyle in a can” pretty much sums up the mantra of the brand. John’s career has also been comprised of vast brand building experience where he has held key executive positions for brands such as Spy Optic, Rip Curl, and On A Mission. John resides in San Diego with his wife Lisa and two children.
